The Sights of Rome: The Einsiedeln Itinerary and the Eighth Century City

The Einsiedeln Itinerary is an eighth century compendium of walks taken through the city of Rome by a visiting Frankish monk. This lecture will look at the identification of the author and the occasion of his visit. It will then follow some of his walks to demonstrate the kinds of sites that the author found important, leading into an examination of the purpose of the document.
