The Dreyfus Affair shocked secular Europe because it revealed that anti-semitism was still a feature of the state’s apparatus. But was the affair a harbinger of Fascistic persecution as some historians have maintained, or more a reflection of the struggle between traditional attitudes and the trends of modern thought? Was Alfred Dreyfus, the secular Jew, the symbol of a changing modern landscape?
