SUMMARY:The Social Life of the Bronze Age Societies in Albania
DESCRIPTION:Anisa Mara\, doctoral candidate\, Department of Art History\, University of Toronto \nThe Bronze Age has long been associated with major societal transformations\, including increased mobility\, social hierarchies\, and differing access to resources\, particularly in the eastern Mediterranean. This pattern of social change has also been used to understand Bronze Age societies in the territory of today’s Albania. However\, it is critical to examine the trajectory and historical transformations of this region more closely. How have Bronze Age societies in Albania been understood to date\, and what does the archaeological record reveal? Moreover\, how is Albania situated within the wider Balkan context? This talk offers an overview of the social life in Bronze Age Albania\, addressing its economy\, political structures\, social hierarchies\, mobility\, and mortuary practices\, drawing on both earlier and recent archaeological research. In particular\, it examines the classic models commonly used to explain social change in Bronze Age Albania – how they have been interpreted and applied – and underscores key issues and future directions for research. Despite dominant explanatory frameworks\, the Albanian case reveals a more nuanced\, underlying pattern that invites us to question\, refine\, and expand traditional models. \nOnline with Zoom: https://utoronto.zoom.us/j/81730003190
